Consulting on Ealing’s Climate Emergency strategy

Ealing’s Climate and Ecological Emergency Strategy was announced this May to make the borough carbon neutral by 2030.

Local people can get involved in a new consultation which will help shape the future of the borough and the action we take to tackle climate change on a local level.

The action plan’s draft strategy focuses on five main areas; including energy, food, green infrastructure, transport and waste.

As part of the next step, the council is seeking the views of residents on this draft strategy to help put local issues front and centre as we move towards a more sustainable borough in the future.

To get involved, please read the draft strategy and complete a short questionnaire to submit your views. This consultation will be open until 27 September 2020.

Feedback will be used to help shape the strategy before it is finalised. After this it will be taken to the council’s cabinet to formally adopt and implement in December 2020.

There will be further opportunities for residents to be involved with the consultation after this initial decision in the long-term as the council’s climate action plan takes shape.

Councillor Mik Sabiers, the council’s cabinet member for environment and highways, explained: “Our ambitious climate strategy aims to address the climate emergency – but many of the adjustments we need to make to combat climate change can result in hugely positive changes in other areas of our lives, and these are known as co-benefits.

“It is vital that resident’s views and ideas help shape our responses and strategies in the long-term, which is why I encourage everyone to have a read of our draft strategy and contribute towards the consultation.

“In 2018 the UN reported that we had 12 years left to act on climate change to avoid a global disaster, and last year, we declared a climate emergency.

“Acting now on climate change will dramatically improve the council’s environmental performance and help to protect residents from the impacts of climate change in the future.”
